It was built around 1336 at the behest of Filippo Sangineto, the first Count of Altomonte, on the site of an earlier Norman building dedicated to Santa Maria de’ Franchis. Subsequently, in the early decades of the 15th century, the Sanseverino family extended the structure, whilst in 1443 the church passed to the Dominicans, who founded a monastery there.

The building has a Latin cross plan with a single nave, flanked by two side chapels and ending in a straight apse. The transept is covered by elegant cross vaults, following a pattern typical of Angevin buildings in the Neapolitan area, whilst the nave retains a pitched roof.

The facade, flanked by a massive bell tower, reveals clear French influences: the central rose window and the decorated portal, framed by an arch with carved plant motifs, stand out.

Inside, there are important historical and artistic treasures, including the Sangineto family’s funerary monument, the floor-level tomb of Cobella Ruffo and the tomb of an unknown knight at the entrance. Also of considerable interest is a fresco depicting a saint, probably part of a larger pictorial cycle, the wooden choir from 1480 with 37 stalls, and the Baroque altar in carved and gilded wood dedicated to St Michael.

Adjacent to the church stands the former Dominican friary, now home to the Altomonte Civic Museum, which completes the historical and cultural significance of this extraordinary complex.

The Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione in Altomonte, in Calabria, is one of the most interesting examples of Angevin architecture in the region.

[50388
76121,76123
30159
post-309308","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-altomonte-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-calabria-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-cosenza-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
