Situated at an altitude of around 1,120 metres, in the municipality of Pacentro, this small mountain sanctuary preserves the authentic charm of Abruzzo’s rural spirituality and the ancient traditions linked to transhumance.

The complex consists of two structures built in different periods: a religious chapel and a small adjoining residential building. The church, dating back to 1428 as evidenced by the date engraved on the lintel of the portal, features a simple rectangular nave originally covered by a barrel vault, which is still partially visible above the marble altar. At the centre of the altar stands a niche housing the bust of Saint Germanus the Bishop, a figure particularly venerated by the monks of Monte Cassino.

The façade of the hermitage is striking in its simplicity: on the right is the rectangular portal of the chapel, whilst on the left is the arched entrance to the residential building, which was probably used in centuries past as a shelter for shepherds during the transhumance. Almost in the centre stands the characteristic bell gable, rebuilt in 1985 thanks to the efforts of the Pacentrana Cultural Association and the work of stonemason Ferdinando De Angelis.

Over the course of its long history, the hermitage has suffered damage and undergone restoration, likely also due to the severe earthquakes that struck the Maiella area, such as that of 1706. Even today, sturdy buttresses can be seen in the north-east corner of the church, designed to reinforce the structure. The residential building, however, has partially collapsed but is protected by a modern wooden roof.

The hermitage stands in a small valley surrounded by ancient dry-stone huts and offers a splendid view of the Maiella mountains, with the majestic bastion of Monte Amaro dominating the landscape. This place, immersed in the tranquillity of nature, has always been a destination for pilgrimages and popular devotion. In the past, the faithful would collect earth and small stones near the sanctuary, which were believed to have miraculous properties against fever; after their recovery, the bundles were brought back and hung in the little church as a sign of thanksgiving.

Even today, on the last Sunday in July, traditional religious services are held at the Hermitage of San Germano, attracting both worshippers and day-trippers. The path leading to the hermitage winds through woods and offers stunning mountain views, making for a pleasant walk for those wishing to discover the most authentic and spiritual side of Abruzzo.

The visit can continue to the nearby medieval village of Pacentro, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, dominated by the imposing Cantelmo-Caldora Castle and rich in historical sites, churches and centuries-old traditions.

Discover the Hermitage of San Germano in Pacentro, an ancient mountain sanctuary in the Maiella National Park, where spirituality, transhumance and the breathtaking views of Abruzzo come together.

[50903
76400,101783
30159
post-309267","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-pacentro-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-abruzzo-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-laquila-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
