Also known as the Hermitage of San Vito or the Hermitage of Portelle, this simple 19th-century rural cottage stands on a promontory surrounded by broom, sea and cliffs, in a position offering extraordinary views.

In the summer of 1889, the poet stayed there with his partner Barbara Leoni, the famous ‘beautiful Roman’, finding in these surroundings the inspiration for his novel *Il Trionfo della Morte*. The hermitage, the sea below and the nearby Trabocco Turchino become, in fact, central settings of the work, where love, passion and tragedy blend with the rugged and poetic landscape of the Abruzzo coast.

It was his friend, the painter Francesco Paolo Michetti, who suggested this retreat to D’Annunzio, far from the chaos of Rome and the gossip of high society. Here, the poet spent weeks of intense creativity, devoting himself to writing and experiencing a love that he himself considered one of the most genuine of his life.

The building still retains the simple charm of traditional rural Abruzzo architecture. The property is spread over two floors: the ground floor housed the library and the writing room, whilst the upper floor contained the lovers’ bedroom. The sandstone façade, the portico and the panoramic balcony ensure the cottage blends perfectly into the coastal landscape.

The garden of the hermitage is now also home to the grave of Barbara Leoni, which was moved here in 2009 at the request of the family who own the residence. From the headland, there is a breathtaking view of the Adriatic Sea and the trabocchi, in a place that still retains the romantic and melancholic atmosphere described by D’Annunzio in his works.

The D’Annunzio Hermitage, now a private house-museum open to visitors by appointment during the summer, is an unmissable stop for anyone wishing to discover the deep connection between literature, nature and the landscape along the Trabocchi Coast.

Discover the D’Annunzio Hermitage in San Vito Chietino, Gabriele D’Annunzio’s retreat in Abruzzo on the Trabocchi Coast, overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

[51055
76400,76401
30159
post-309193","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-san-vito-chietino-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-abruzzo-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-chieti-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
