Surrounded by the silence of the woods and a picturesque landscape, the complex began as a hermitage, ideal for the contemplative life.

Its origins date back to the 15th century, but it was in 1604 that Pope Clement VIII granted the request of the Venerable Father Pietro della Madre di Dio, officially designating the site as a hermitage for the Discalced Carmelites. Despite its isolation, the convent soon became an active centre of formation: it housed a seminary for the missions, a novitiate and schools of philosophy for the religious.

The present church, dedicated to St Sylvester, was built in 1660 on a Greek cross plan. Modest in size yet harmonious in design, it retains its original altars, to which the altar dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel was later added. In 1926, a chapel was also built in honour of St Thérèse of Lisieux, further evidence of Carmelite devotion.

Over the centuries, the complex has undergone various transformations. In 1874, it was expropriated by the State and converted into a retirement home, before being returned to the Carmelites, who restored it and transformed it into a college for young religious aspirants. Among the most significant interventions was the one supported by Pope Benedict XV, whilst further extensions in the 20th century made the spaces more suitable for community life.

Since 1997, the convent has officially been a House of Hospitality and Spirituality, whilst retaining its original vocation. It also houses a small art gallery, established thanks to private donations, which features 17th-century works from the Caravaggio and Mannerist schools. Among the most notable paintings was a work by Gherardo delle Notti, depicting Saint Joseph the Carpenter with the Infant Jesus, which was unfortunately stolen in recent years.

Today, the convent continues to be a place of peace and meditation, where time seems to slow down and where the interplay between nature, art and spirituality offers an authentic and profound experience to those who visit it.

Discover the Carmelite Monastery in Monte Compatri, a hermitage nestled in the heart of nature, where spirituality, art and silence come together.

[50834
76148,76152
30159
post-308568","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-monte-compatri-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-lazio-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-rome","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
