It was blessed in 1633 by Bishop Giovanni Altieri, but the official consecration did not take place until 1773, performed by Cardinal Duke of York, Bishop of Tusculum.

The façade is probably attributed to Carlo Rainaldi, whilst the transept, apse and dome are the result of later alterations, including those carried out in 1876 to a design by Luca Casimini. The original structure was simpler, consisting of a single nave with seven altars and a bell tower, now replaced by the Chapel of the Madonna di Loreto.

During the 19th century, the church was enlarged and renovated: in 1865, on the occasion of Pope Pius IX’s visit, new works were commenced thanks in part to the Pope’s support, who provided labour from the prisons. Further restoration work was carried out on the building in 1876, whilst the earthquake of 1899 caused part of the vault to collapse. In the early 20th century, the church was restored once more and consecrated in 1901 by Cardinal Severino Vanutelli; the final works were completed in 1933 with the construction of the choir loft, the replacement of the stained-glass windows and the decoration of the side chapels.

Inside, there are some fine paintings, including *The Death of Saint Francis* and *The Virgin and Child with Saints*, attributed to Vanni and Passignano respectively. Today, the church is open to the public and is one of the main places of worship and of historical and artistic interest in Monte Compatri.

Discover the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo in Monte Compatri, a 17th-century building commissioned by Scipione Borghese, featuring paintings and a history marked by numerous restorations.

[50834
76148,76152
30159
post-308566","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-monte-compatri-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-lazio-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-rome","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
