Towards the end of the 13th century, the church was administered by a lay brotherhood known as the &#8216;Battuti&#8217; or &#8216;Disciplinati&#8217;, groups of faithful devoted to prayer and penitential practices.<\/p>\n<p>In the 17th century, the building was enlarged, remodelling and integrating the older structure.
