Its origins date back to the early Middle Ages: historical records confirm the existence of a church as early as 758, founded by the nobleman Magno and subsequently donated to the Bishop of Piacenza in 772. No visible remains of this first building survive, but the early medieval circular baptismal font, still preserved today, may be linked to it.

In 1059, the church is mentioned as a parish church, a sign of its importance in the area, but the earthquake of 1117 severely compromised its structure. The reconstruction was swift and led to the construction of the present collegiate church, completed in 1122, which still retains its austere and evocative Romanesque layout.

Inside, the building recounts centuries of history through its chapels and the works of art it houses. Among the most significant spaces, the Chapel of Saint Catherine of Alexandria stands out; built and frescoed in its entirety in the early 15th century, it represents one of the church’s most precious pictorial cycles. Adjacent to this, the Chapel of Saint Joseph, built in 1630 as a votive offering for the end of the plague, offers a rare example of Baroque art within a predominantly Romanesque setting.

The complex is completed by the Collegiate Church Museum, housed in the adjacent premises and accessible from the churchyard via the cloister, which dates from the late 13th to the early 14th century. The museum exhibition brings together works from the collegiate church and local churches, including silverware, sacred furnishings, paintings, sculptures, manuscripts and archival materials, offering a comprehensive overview of the village’s religious and artistic history.

The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta thus represents the spiritual heart of Castell’Arquato, a place where architecture, art and memory intertwine, offering visitors all the charm of a past that is still very much alive.

Discover the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Castell’Arquato: early medieval origins, a Romanesque reconstruction, historic chapels and the museum housing sacred artworks.

[50534
76133,76139
30159
post-308464","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-castell-arquato","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-emilia-romagna-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-piacenza-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
