Originally, it consisted of a simple single nave, but over the centuries the building underwent various alterations that changed its structure.

In the 13th century, the side walls and the counter-façade were adorned with an extensive cycle of frescoes, an artistic legacy of great value. Next to the church stands a sturdy bell tower with a spire, built separately from the main body of the building, in accordance with a style common in medieval architecture.

The interior of the church now has a rectangular plan divided into three naves, with two chapels on the left side and one on the right. The quadrangular apse is flanked by two side chapels that complete the architectural layout.

Particularly significant are the remains of the cycle of frescoes decorating the walls and the counter-façade: this is one of the most complete medieval pictorial cycles preserved in Sardinia. The scenes depict episodes from the Old and New Testaments and show clear stylistic affinities with the painting of the Umbrian-Roman area in the second half of the 12th century, confirming the cultural and artistic links between the island and the rest of the peninsula in medieval times.

Discover the Church of San Pietro in Galtellì, an important medieval building in Sardinia featuring a spired bell tower and one of the island’s most complete cycles of medieval frescoes.

[50701
76192,76190
30159
post-308430","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-galtelli-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-nuoro-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-sardinia","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
