In particular, the local variety known as “raggiolana” was highly prized for its high yield: its fruits, small yet hardy, were ideal for drying and grinding into flour, an essential staple in the Casentino farming tradition.

The ecomuseum unfolds along a route stretching across the village and the surrounding area, guiding visitors on a journey of discovery through the so-called “chestnut civilisation”. The interpretation centre, situated in the heart of the village, serves as the starting point of the itinerary and recounts the ancient activities linked to the harvesting, drying and processing of chestnuts.

Through agricultural tools, models, information panels and multimedia content, visitors can gain an understanding of how the chestnut tree has shaped daily life, the local economy and traditions for centuries. The historic structures scattered throughout the area, such as drying sheds and mills, are also of great significance, bearing witness to the ingenuity of the mountain communities in processing the fruit.

The landscape surrounding Raggiolo is dominated by vast chestnut groves, flanked by the beech and fir forests that characterise the Casentino. Here, the relationship between man and nature still appears authentic today and is deeply rooted in the collective memory.

One of the most significant elements of the ecomuseum is the ‘Map of the Community of Raggiolo’, created with the direct contribution of the inhabitants and designed to preserve and pass on the knowledge, stories and cultural identity of the village.

The Chestnut Ecomuseum thus offers a fascinating journey into Tuscan rural tradition, where landscape, memory and culture intertwine around one of the most important trees in the history of the Apennines.

Opening hours

April–June: Sundays and public holidays from 4 pm to 6 pm;
July: Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 4 pm to 7 pm;
August: Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10 am to 12 noon and from 4 pm to 7 pm;
September–November: Sundays and public holidays from 3 pm to 5 pm.

Other opening times available on request

Discover the Raggiolo Chestnut Ecomuseum: a journey through the world of the chestnut tree, exploring the traditions, mills and chestnut groves of the Casentino region.

[50975
76211,76210
28444
post-308426","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-raggiolo-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-arezzo-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-tuscany","what-to-see-category-museum
["GET
