{"id":308354,"date":"2024-08-09T19:26:14","date_gmt":"2024-08-09T17:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/what-to-see\/cathedral-of-the-immaculate-conception-2\/"},"modified":"2026-04-28T11:57:43","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T09:57:43","slug":"cathedral-of-the-immaculate-conception","status":"publish","type":"what-to-see","link":"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/what-to-see\/cathedral-of-the-immaculate-conception\/","title":{"rendered":"Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Co-Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/village\/bosa\/\"><strong>Bosa\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> cathedral and is characterised externally by two domes, covered in coloured majolica tiles, and by the squat red sandstone bell tower, which remains unfinished and bears the carved date 1683. The interior consists of a single barrel-vaulted nave divided into five bays by pilasters and transverse arches, with four chapels on each side. The first chapel on the right is the \u2018cappellone\u2019 of the Sacred Heart, which extends considerably in length and is organised as a small church in its own right, perpendicular to the cathedral.<\/p>\n<p>The chapels of the transept are dedicated to St Joseph, Our Lady of Bonaria, and the souls in Purgatory. The side walls of the nave are divided into four bays by half-columns with ornate capitals, supporting a continuous entablature which in turn supports the 17-metre-high barrel vault, divided into 10 lunettes corresponding to 10 large windows. Between 1877 and 1878, the interior was decorated with tempera paintings by Emilio Scherer of Parma, depicting Dante\u2019s Paradise.<\/p>\n<p>The final notable feature of the cathedral is the two statues of Saints Peter and Paul flanking the altar. These two statues, dating from 1608, come from the ancient Cathedral of San Pietro Extramuros, where they were housed in two niches and displayed on feast days.
