Famous for having been the scene of the historic Battle of Trasimeno in 217 BC, in which Hannibal inflicted a heavy defeat on the Roman army, today Tuoro retains the authentic charm of small lakeside villages, with quiet alleyways, panoramic squares and views that come alive with colour, especially at sunset.

The village is one of the most picturesque gateways to Lake Trasimeno and, together with Passignano sul Trasimeno and Castiglione del Lago, is one of the ideal places to experience the lake through lakeside walks, boat trips and nature trails. Ferries depart from the port of Punta Navaccia for the splendid Isola Maggiore, a true gem of Lake Trasimeno.

Tuoro’s origins date back to ancient times, but the town really came into its own during the Middle Ages thanks to its strategic location between Umbria and Tuscany. Even today, the area retains traces of the centuries of battles and periods of rule that have shaped its history, whilst the lake continues to offer a relaxed and authentic atmosphere, perfect for those seeking a destination that combines culture, scenery and traditions.

What to see in Tuoro sul Trasimeno

The heart of the village centres on Piazza del Municipio, an elegant square dominated by the historic 19th-century fountain in serena stone. Historic buildings such as the Palazzo Comunale and Palazzo Buratta overlook the square, whilst nearby stands Palazzo Garbi, the birthplace of the 18th-century painter Anton Maria Garbi.

Strolling through the streets of the town centre, you reach the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, patron saint of the town. The church, which was enlarged in the 19th century, is striking for its large dome, over twenty metres high, so much so that Pope Leo XIII described it as “a little St Peter’s”. Inside, there is an extraordinary Futurist fresco by Gerardo Dottori, considered one of his masterpieces.

Among the village’s most interesting attractions is the Museum of Hannibal at Lake Trasimeno, a modern multimedia space dedicated to the famous battle fought on the shores of the lake. Through videos, 4D reconstructions, display panels and interactive installations, the museum allows visitors to relive one of the most dramatic episodes of the Second Punic War.

The historic centre is also the starting point for the evocative Historical Trail of Hannibal’s Battle, a route of around 17 kilometres that passes through the sites of the ancient clash between the Romans and the Carthaginians. The trail winds through hills, countryside and vantage points, guiding visitors on a journey of discovery through the areas where Hannibal’s ambush took place.

Campo del Sole and the lakeside promenade

At Punta Navaccia, along the shores of Lake Trasimeno, lies one of the most fascinating sites in the area: the Campo del Sole, a large open-air museum created between the 1980s and 1990s.

Here stand monumental stone column statues, crafted from pietra serena by international artists and arranged in a large symbolic spiral reminiscent of Stonehenge and the theme of the labyrinth. The park is particularly evocative at sunset, when the sunlight reflects off the lake and the sculptures, taking on a rosy hue.

Adjacent to the park lies Lido di Tuoro, with small beaches, green spaces and tourist facilities ideal for relaxing on the shores of Lake Trasimeno or enjoying a stroll amidst the colours of the lake.

From Tuoro to Isola Maggiore

Ferries depart frequently from the Punta Navaccia pier bound for Isola Maggiore, which can be reached in just a few minutes by boat. The island is home to a picturesque fishing village, ancient craft traditions and splendid scenic paths nestled amongst olive trees, cypresses and holm oaks.

Among the island’s most interesting attractions is the Lace Museum, a testament to the ancient art of embroidery handed down through the centuries. The island is also deeply linked to the figure of St Francis of Assisi, who stayed here during Lent in 1211 in search of silence and spirituality.

In the vicinity of Tuoro

The area surrounding the village offers numerous routes combining history and nature. Just a few kilometres from the centre lies the Montegualandro Castle, an ancient fortification commanding a view over the lake and the routes linking Umbria and Tuscany. Although the building is privately owned and not open to the public, the view from its surroundings is extraordinary.

The Torre Pendete di Vernazzano is also very striking; it is all that remains of an ancient medieval castle destroyed over the centuries by landslides and earthquakes. The tower, leaning at an angle of about thirteen degrees and now supported by tie rods, rises from the woods, offering a truly unique sight.

With its lakeside scenery, historic trails, contemporary art and traces of the past, Tuoro sul Trasimeno is one of the most charming destinations on Lake Trasimeno, combining the allure of ancient history with the tranquillity of the Umbrian countryside.

165184
76385,76384
35888
post-384033","village","type-village","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-tuoro-sul-trasimeno","borghi-perugia","borghi-umbria","village-category-village-on-a-lake
["GET
