Located on the border of Campo Imperatore, Rocca Calascio is a fascinating medieval castle that rises 1460 meters above sea level, the highest in the Apennines. This futuristic tower, overlooking the Gran Sasso d'Italia, offers breathtaking views that extend to Mount Sirente, Velino, the Plain of Navelli and the charming village of Calascio below, nestled at 1,200 meters above sea level.<\/p>\n
Rocca Calascio, first mentioned in 1380, appears to have been built around the year 1000 as an isolated watchtower. Antonio Piccolomini is credited with the construction of the four towers and the surrounding wall around Rocca Calascio in 1480, as well as the reconstruction of much of the town, which was devastated by the earthquakes of 1348\/1349 and 1461.<\/p>\n
