Nestled on the Adriatic coast of Puglia, Otranto is known as the “Gateway to the East”, because it is here that Italy’s easternmost point lies, at Punta Palascìa, where the sun first illuminates the Italian peninsula and where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas seem to meet.

Strolling through the historic centre means traversing centuries of history. The old town, enclosed by defensive walls and accessible through the monumental Porta Alfonsina, still retains the atmosphere of fortified Mediterranean towns: a maze of white alleyways, stone arches, stairways, hidden courtyards and terraces overlooking the sea. Here, every corner tells the story of the passage of different peoples – the Messapians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans and Aragonese – who over the centuries have left a profound mark on the city’s art, culture and architecture.

Dominating the town is the majestic Aragonese Castle, built by the Aragonese at the end of the 15th century to defend the town from invasions by sea. Its imposing cylindrical towers, moat and walls bear witness to Otranto’s military past, whilst today the interior spaces host exhibitions and cultural events that bring the heart of the town to life.

One of the village’s most remarkable landmarks is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata, built during the Norman period between 1080 and 1088. Inside, it houses one of Europe’s most important artistic treasures: the gigantic floor mosaic created by the monk Pantaleone, a veritable pictorial encyclopaedia interweaving biblical episodes, medieval symbols, mythological figures and references to Eastern and Western culture. The cathedral also houses the evocative Chapel of the Martyrs, where the remains of the 800 Martyrs of Otranto are preserved; they were killed in 1480 during the Turkish siege for refusing to renounce the Christian faith. It is one of the most dramatic and symbolic episodes in the city’s history, and remains deeply intertwined with Otranto’s identity to this day.

Otranto is also home to valuable examples of Byzantine art, such as the Church of San Pietro, considered one of the finest examples of Byzantine art in Apulia, with splendid frescoes and a Greek cross plan that reflects the town’s strong ties with the East.

But Otranto is not just about history. The sea takes centre stage here and frames every view of the town. From the marina to the walls overlooking the Adriatic, everything speaks of seafaring, trade and travel. The surrounding area boasts some of Salento’s most beautiful natural landscapes: the famous Baia dei Turchi, with its white sandy beach and turquoise waters; the picturesque Alimini Lakes nestled in the Mediterranean scrub; the rugged cliffs of Baia delle Orte; and Porto Badisco, where, according to legend, Aeneas landed whilst fleeing Troy.

The area also preserves ancient rock-cut crypts, early Christian catacombs and the remains of the famous Monastery of San Nicola di Casole, one of the most important medieval cultural centres in the Mediterranean, which housed one of the richest libraries in the West before its destruction during the Turkish invasion.

Today, Otranto is one of Puglia’s most popular destinations, combining the charm of a history stretching back thousands of years with the beauty of an extraordinary sea. With sunsets over the city walls, the scent of the sea, narrow streets lit up at night and views stretching out over the Adriatic, the town offers an experience that captivates the eyes, the heart and the memory. It is a city that tells a story of the meeting of cultures, legends, faith and the sea, whilst maintaining its role as a symbolic bridge between East and West.

50901
76346,76351
35898,164887,35899,35887,35890
post-176549","village","type-village","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-otranto-it","borghi-apulia","borghi-lecce","village-category-camper-parking-area","village-category-medieval-village","village-category-most-beautiful-villages-in-italy","village-category-sea-village","village-category-village-with-castle
["GET
