As a backdrop for the village there are the Martani mountains, which represent one of the main attractions. It is assumed that the current Massa Martana was the ancient Roman settlement Vicus at Martis (or Vicus Martanus or Marta) on the via Flaminia. Ancient medieval hamlet of enchanting charm, it rises in an environmental context of great significance and strong visual impact. Massa Martana is an ancient medieval village, which returned to its ancient splendour thanks to the restoration work carried out after the earthquake in\u00a01997. The territory, crossed by the ancient Via Flaminia, is rich in Roman finds\u00a0and churches.<\/p>\n
The walls, a reassurance\u00a0of security but also a display of\u00a0prestige, are enriched by the characteristic bastions and doors which provided access to the village. The main entrance, with a monumental appearance, shows a series of coats of arms and engraved stones set on the right side. Among these, there is the Roman inscription which recalls the restoration of the Via Flaminia, made by Emperor Hadrian while, as for the coats of arms, very interesting are the one of the noble Fonzi family and the one of Massa Martana which has a five-petal flower and a half moon on it. By crossing the door we enter in the main square of the hamlet, Piazza Umberto I, quite\u00a0wide and regular, which symbolized\u00a0the most representative point of the historical and cultural identity of Massa Martana.<\/p>\n
