It is a border peak and, at the same time, a natural bridge that unites peoples and cultures: Latins, Slavs, and Germanic peoples find here a symbolic place, where the history of these lands merges with the beauty of the mountain.
From above, the gaze glides freely to the grandiose rock faces of Jôf di Montasio, Jôf Fuart, and Mangart, creating a panorama that seems to transport visitors to another time, another rhythm.

At the center of this landscape lies the small village of Lussari, the highest in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a cluster of wooden and stone houses that looks like a nativity scene embraced by clouds. Its narrow streets invite you to slow down and let yourself be guided by the aromas of the inns serving traditional dishes—steaming goulash soup in bread bowls, roasted sausages, mountain flavors that tell the story of centuries of cultural influences. It is a lively village, where pilgrims, hikers, and travelers mingle among souvenir shops, joyful tables, and the warmth of Alpine hospitality.

The spiritual heart of the mountain is the Sanctuary of Monte Lussari, a place that preserves an ancient legend and has a profound meaning for the three linguistic communities that converge here. Built in the 14th century as a simple chapel, enlarged two centuries later and rebuilt several times after destruction caused by lightning and bombing, the sanctuary has always been reborn in the exact same spot, as if to reaffirm its vocation as a symbol of peace and unity. Today, it continues to attract faithful from Italy, Austria, and Slovenia, fascinated by its history and the spiritual power of the place.

Frico

Reaching the mountain is an experience that everyone can choose according to their own pace. The Sentiero del Pellegrino (Pilgrim’s Trail), an ancient path immersed in the thousand-year-old forest of Tarvisio, climbs up the side of the mountain from Camporosso and offers an evocative walk, full of atmosphere. Alternatively, the convenient cable car takes you to a few meters from the village in just a few minutes, allowing everyone to enjoy the peace and enchantment of the summit.

Monte Lussari is also a place for sports in all seasons: in summer, it is the starting point for treks to more challenging peaks and itineraries, including the Cammino Celeste; in winter, the Di Prampero descent, which winds for over three kilometers along the northern slope, is legendary terrain for expert skiers and the scene of international competitions.

More than a mountain, more than a village: Monte Lussari is a place of the soul. A sanctuary in the clouds, a privileged balcony overlooking the Alps and a crossroads where nature, history and spirituality continue to meet, just like the peoples who have been coming here for centuries.

Discover Monte Lussari, a small alpine village suspended between culture, spirituality, and breathtaking views of the Julian Alps.
