A stone’s throw from Gaeta’s<\/strong> historic center, nestled in the promontory of Monte Orlando, lies one of the most fascinating destinations on the Latium coast: the Montagna Spaccata<\/strong> and the striking Grotta del Turco<\/strong>. These places, charged with faith, history and mystery, offer an intense experience that blends nature, spirituality and folk legends. A bridge between Lazio and Campania<\/h3>\n

Gaeta<\/strong><\/a> is a coastal pearl nestled between Rome and Naples, overlooking the Gulf that takes its name. Its historic center is a maze of alleys, arches, scenic vistas and monuments that tell centuries of history, from Roman rule to Longobard, Byzantine and Bourbon presence.<\/p>\n

Among the must-see spots:<\/p>\n

–The Angevin-Aragonese Castle<\/strong>, imposing on the top of the promontory;
\n–The Cathedral of St. Erasmus<\/strong>, with its Romanesque bell tower and relics of the patron saint;

Split Mountain: faith, legend and nature<\/h2>\n

The three fissures in the rock<\/h3>\n

One of Gaeta’s most iconic sites is the Montagna Spaccata<\/strong>, named for the three imposing vertical clefts that cleave the face of the mountain. According to tradition, they opened at the moment of Christ’s death, as recounted in Matthew’s Gospel: “Jesus rendered the spirit, and the earth trembled, and the rocks split”<\/em> (Mt 27:50-51). An epigraph carved into the rock inside the cleft reminds pilgrims who have been coming there for centuries.<\/p>\n

The Legend of the Turk’s Hand<\/h3>\n

Along the staircase in the main rift is the imprint of the “Turk’s Hand”<\/strong><\/em>, left – according to legend – by a skeptical sailor who, upon touching the rock, saw the stone liquefy, leaving the shape of his hand imprinted. This mark is still visible and continues to fascinate visitors.<\/p>\n

The Shrine of the Holy Trinity and the Way of the Cross in majolica tiles<\/h2>\n

Spirituality set in stone<\/h3>\n

In the heart of Split Mountain stands the Shrine of the Holy Trinity<\/strong>, founded between the 10th and 11th centuries, a place of prayer that has seen saints, popes, pilgrims, and rulers pass through. Among the most illustrious visitors: St. Philip Neri, St. Alphonsus Maria de’ Liguori, Ignatius of Loyola, and even Pius IX.<\/p>\n

Along the rocky corridor leading to the chapel is a majolica Stations of the Cross<\/strong>, consisting of 14 stations dating from 1849, with verses attributed to the poet Metastasio. Each panel is a small work of ceramic art, restored over time to restore splendor to the path.<\/p>\n

Turk’s Cave: between geological fascination and mystery<\/h2>\n

A fissure carved by the sea<\/h3>\n

To the left of the main rift is the spectacular Grotta del Turco<\/strong>, a sea cavity accessible via a staircase of more than 300 steps (currently visitable up to a vantage point for safety reasons). The effect of the sun’s rays penetrating the cave creates striking emerald and turquoise reflections, an enchantment that has also won over free climbers and photographers.<\/p>\n

The name “Cave of the Turk<\/strong>” comes from the Saracen raids of the 9th century, when pirates found refuge in these crevices of the headland. Legend and reality are intertwined, giving the cave an aura of mystery and adventure. In 2023, Italia.it listed it among the five most beautiful sea caves in Italy and the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n
