The <strong>Associazione <em>Italia Langobardorum<\/em><\/strong>, entrusted with the management of the UNESCO serial site, proposes a series of <strong>cycling tourism routes<\/strong> along the national cycle network <a href=\"\/\/www.bicitalia.org\/%E2%80%98%E2%80%99\" target=\"\u2018\u2019_blank\u2018\u2019\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>BICITALIA<\/em><\/a>, adopted by the <strong>FIAB<\/strong> (Italian Federation for Environment and Cycling).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Friuli-Venezia Giulia:\u00a0The Gastaldaga area of Cividale del Friuli<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We begin our journey from Friuli-Venezia Giulia,\u00a0where the ancient capital of the Longobard Duchy\u00a0of Friuli is located:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/village\/cividale-del-friuli\/\" target=\"\u2018\u2019_blank\u2018\u2019\" rel=\"noopener\">Cividale del Friuli<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0which hosts on its territory the\u2019<strong>area of the Gastaldaga<\/strong>, with the\u00a0<strong>Longobard Temple<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>Episcopal Complex<\/strong>,\u00a0originally\u00a0 formed by a set of buildings, the Basilica, the Baptistery of St. John the Baptist and the Patriarchal Palace, the remains of which can be seen in the basement of the <strong>National Archaeological Museum<\/strong>, whose collections include a conspicuous Longobard section with numerous artefacts of exceptional value. It is precisely from the Baptistery that two of the most important works of Longobard sculptural production come from, dating back to the period of the so-called \u201cLiutprandean renaissance\u201d today preserved in the Christian\/Treasury Museum of the Cathedral: the <strong>Tegurio di Callisto<\/strong>, an octagonal aedicule that covered the baptismal font, and the <strong>Altare del duca Ratchis<\/strong>, made of Istrian stone, with four antependia carved in flattened relief bearing biblical themes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Cividale-del-Friuli_Tempietto-longobardo-dettaglio.jpg\" alt=\"Cividale del Friuli, Tempietto longobardo\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>Cividale del Friuli, Tempietto longobardo<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Bicycle route in eastern Friuli from Udine to Cividale del Friuli<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Discover the Longobard cultural roots of eastern Friuli with a 25-kilometre <strong>cycle route<\/strong> connecting <strong>Udine to Cividale del Friuli<\/strong>, considered the \u201cLongobard capital\u201d of the region. This route, suitable for everyone, follows the route of the <strong>FVG4<\/strong> from Caneva to the Slovenian border in the Natisone valleys.<\/p>\n<p>The route can start from the <strong>centre of Udine<\/strong> or from Godia near the Torre stream. Along the way, you can visit the charming centre of Udine with its squares with a Venetian atmosphere, such as Piazza Libert\u00e0 and Piazza Matteotti. Although there is no dedicated cycle path, the <strong>path is safe<\/strong> thanks to the minor roads with little traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Acrossing an agricultural area with vegetable gardens and cultivated fields, the route offers panoramic views of the <strong>Julian Alps<\/strong> to the northeast. After Cividale del Friuli, well-trained cyclists can continue along the well-marked \u201c<strong>Bimobis<\/strong>\u201d route, which crosses into Slovenia via Caporetto and Tolmino, before returning to Italy at Gorizia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/41412011430_9c66d1cb58_o-lucarodriguez-flickr.jpg\" alt=\"Ciclabile Friuli\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>Ph. lucarodriguez\/flickr<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>In Lombardy in the city of Brescia<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In Lombardy, discover the city of Brescia, capital of the Duchy of the same name. Here, the San Salvatore-Santa Giulia complex, now home to the City Museum, was built in 753 at the behest of Desiderio, the future king of the Lombards. This extraordinary architectural complex, which includes the monastery of Santa Giulia and the basilica of San Salvatore, exhibits numerous Longobard archaeological finds. In the oratory of Santa Maria in Solario is the <strong>\u2018Cross of King Desiderius\u2019&#8221;<\/strong>, while in the <strong>archaeological area<\/strong> nearby you can admire the Capitolium and the Roman Theatre of ancient Brixia.<\/p>\n<p>Brescia offers <strong>six cycling routes<\/strong> through the hills, including <strong>\u2018The Landscapes of King Desiderius\u2019\u2018<\/strong> and <strong>\u2019The Hills of King Rotari\u2018\u2019<\/strong>, which pass through picturesque landscapes of vineyards and ancient marble quarries. Brescia \u00e8 is also part of the <a href=\"\/\/www.comuniciclabili.it\/%E2%80%98%E2%80%99\" target=\"\u2018\u2019_blank\u2018\u2019\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>\u2018\u2019ComuniCiclabili\u00ae\u2018\u2019 2023<\/strong><\/a> network of the FIAB, which rewards municipalities committed to cycling mobility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Brescia_Chiostro-di-San-Salvatore.jpg\" alt=\"Brescia, Chiostro di San Salvatore\" width=\"1280\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>Brescia, Chiostro di San Salvatore<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>At <strong>Castelseprio-Torba<\/strong>, in the province of Varese, the <strong>Archaeological Park of Castelseprio<\/strong> preserves the castrum, a late Roman fortified site reused by the Lombards. The church of Santa Maria foris portas offers frescoes on the infancy of Christ, while the Torre di Torba, transformed into a Benedictine monastery in the 8th century, preserves precious frescoes.<\/p>\n<p>The archaeological park of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/village\/castelseprio\/\" target=\"\u2018\u2019_blank\u2018\u2019\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Castelseprio<\/strong> <\/a> and the monastery of Torba are also major resting places along the <strong>Altro Olona Valley cycle path<\/strong>, a cycle route of about 20 km that follows the disused Valmorea railway, linking Castellanza to Mendrisio. The route, on a mixed asphalt-gravel surface, runs along the Olona River and through a <strong>lush landscape<\/strong>. Near the cycle route, besides the Lombard site, it is possible to visit the ancient village of Castiglione Olona and the monastery of the Assunta in Cairate. In Busto Arsizio, a structure of the <a href=\"\/\/bicitalia.org\/it\/albergabici%E2%80%98%E2%80%99\" target=\"\u2018\u2019_blank\u2018\u2019\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>FIAB Albergabici\u00ae<\/strong><\/a> circuit offers ideal services for cyclists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Castelseprio_Chiesa-di-Santa-Maria-foris-portas.jpg\" alt=\"Castelseprio, Chiesa di Santa Maria foris portas\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>Castelseprio,<\/em>\u00a0<em>Church of Santa Maria foris portas<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Umbria: In the Duchy of Spoleto<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Continuing along the Lombard route in Umbria, in the Duchy of Spoleto, we find the UNESCO sites of <strong>Spoleto and Campello sul Clitunno<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In Spoleto, the <strong>Basilica di San Salvatore<\/strong>, erected in memory of the martyrs Concordio and Senzia and then dedicated to the Saviour in the Lombard era, is an example of classical architecture, with materials from Roman buildings. The <strong>National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto<\/strong>, located in the Rocca Albornoziana, collects important Longobard artefacts.<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>Campello sul Clitunno<\/strong>, the Tempietto del Clitunno, built between the 7th and 8th centuries, uses reused Roman materials, harmoniously assembled. Nicoletta di Cicco Pucci<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Assisi-Spoleto cycle path in the heart of Umbria<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The sites of Spoleto and Campello sul Clitunno are crossed by the <strong>Assisi-Spoleto<\/strong> cycle path, a 45 km route, flat and protected, offering spectacular views of the Umbrian hills, dotted with olive groves, vineyards and medieval villages. The route passes through famous tourist resorts such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/village\/montefalco\/\" target=\"\u2018\u2019_blank\u2018\u2019\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Montefalco<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/village\/trevi\/\" target=\"\u2018\u2019_blank\u2018\u2019\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Trevi<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Foligno<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/village\/bevagna\/\" target=\"\u2018\u2019_blank\u2018\u2019\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bevagna<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/village\/spello\/\" target=\"\u2018\u2019_blank\u2018\u2019\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Spello<\/strong> <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/village\/assisi\/\" target=\"\u2018\u2019_blank\u2018\u2019\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Assisi<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Along the route, there are facilities of the <strong>FIAB Albergabici\u00ae<\/strong> circuit, ideal for cycling tourists. Foligno also bears the FIAB ComuniCiclabili\u00ae 2023 mark, demonstrating a strong commitment to bicycle mobility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Tempietto-del-Clitunno-Umbria.jpg\" alt=\"Tempietto del Clitunno\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>Tempietto del Clitunno<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Campania: The Complex of Santa Sofia at Benevento<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The journey along the sites of the Longobard Serial Site takes us to <strong>Benevento<\/strong>, capital of the Longobard Duchy from 570 to 1077. Here stands the <strong>Church of Santa Sofia<\/strong>, built in 760 by Arechi II, Duke of Benevento, as his personal chapel and national shrine. The centrally planned interior features columns and pillars forming a concentric hexagon and decagon, with capitals of classical age. The two minor apses preserve frescoes dedicated to stories of Christ. Adjacent to the church is the monastery, now housing the Sannio Museum, which exhibits Longobard artefacts and grave goods found in the Benevento necropolis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Benevento_Chiesa-di-Santa-Sofia-esterno.jpg\" alt=\"Benevento, Chiesa di Santa Sofia\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Church of Santa Sofia<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Campania section of the Ciclovia Francigena<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The territory of Benevento and its ancient duchy can be explored by bicycle along the <strong>BI3 &#8211; Ciclovia Francigena,\u00a0<\/strong>a long cycle route that, integrating into the Italian part of the <strong>EuroVelo Route n\u00b05<\/strong>, winds along secondary roads, dirt tracks and paths suitable for two wheels and stretches over 2. 500 kilometres from Como to Brindisi, tracing the course of the ancient <strong>Via Francigena<\/strong>, used by pilgrims in the Middle Ages to reach the holy places of the Christian faith.<\/p>\n<p>After following the <strong>Volturno Cycleway<\/strong>, the itinerary enters the province of Benevento, rich in Roman and Longobard historical evidence. At <strong>Telese Terme<\/strong>, renowned for its thermal waters, and <strong>Solopaca<\/strong>, with its ducal palace and Norman castle, there are accommodation facilities of the <strong>FIAB Albergabici\u00ae<\/strong> network, ideal for stops and overnight stays.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Benevento_Chiesa-di-Santa-Sofia.jpg\" alt=\"Benevento, Chiesa di Santa Sofia\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>Interior of the Church of Santa Sofia<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Apulia: The Basilica-Sanctuary of St Michael Archangel in Monte Sant\u2019Angelo<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The last stop on the journey through the Lombard territories \u00e8 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/village\/monte-santangelo\/\" target=\"\u2018\u2019_blank\u2018\u2019\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Monte Sant&#8217;Angelo<\/strong><\/a> in Apulia, part of the duchy of Benevento since the 6th century. Here, the <strong>Sanctuary of St Michael Archangel<\/strong>, built around a limestone cave, became the national shrine of the Lombards from the 7th century. Linked to the cult of St Michael by assonances with the pagan god Wodan, the Lombards considered St Michael the protector of Christianity and a model for other shrines in Europe.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Apulian and Gargano section of the Adriatic Ciclovia<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The <strong>Ciclovia Adriatica (BI6)<\/strong> crosses the Gargano peninsula and Monte Sant&#8217;Angelo, connecting Trieste to Leuca for over 1,700 kilometres. In Apulia, the route offers beautiful coastal and mountainous views, passing through <strong>Monte Sant&#8217;Angelo, Manfredonia, Brindisi and Bari<\/strong>.
