San Gusm\u00e8 is a small but charming Tuscan village, located in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga<\/strong><\/a>, which has managed to retain its ancient and authentic charm. Its narrow, winding streets, stone alleys and arches arranged along the way retain the essence of a bygone era. The stone houses, churches and surrounding walls testify to its thousand-year history. The history and name of the village<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Its name derives from St. Cosmas, with the church of the same name documented as early as 867. In 1201 the village was still relatively small and unfortified. However, following raids by mercenary companies in 1370, the inhabitants chose to build defensive walls with the help of Siena.<\/p>\n

What to see in San Gusm\u00e8<\/strong><\/h2>\n

San Gusm\u00e8 is a present-day example of a fortified village, with a circular plan enclosed by sections of wall still intact. The two original entrances, the Porta Senese<\/strong> and the Porta Nuova<\/strong>, introduce the village. The first is adorned with a rectangular marble plaque with the Sienese balzana between two leaves. The second, located near the church of Saints Cosmas and Damian<\/strong>, was built in 1939. In addition, the churches of Saints Cosmas and Damian and SS. Annunziata<\/strong> are located within the village.<\/p>\n

The small village is home to the unique statue of Luca Cava<\/strong>, built in 1888 to indicate a place where people could get their needs met. According to folklore, it was placed by an innkeeper fed up with the discourtesy of his customers.
\nThe statue has become a symbol of San Gusm\u00e8<\/strong> and is much appreciated by the townspeople, so much so that when it was destroyed in the 1940s, it was had rebuilt based on a design by noted cartoonist Emilio Giannelli. Since then, the Festival in honor of Luca Cava has been held on the first two weekends of September.<\/p>\n

San Gusm\u00e8 is a hidden gem in the heart of Chianti that is well worth discovering.
