Every year, during the last week of July, the village is transformed into a vast open-air stage where history, tradition and a sense of community come together in a truly unique event.

The 2026 edition will take place from 19 to 26 July, offering visitors a full week of events, historical parades, performances, competitions between districts and evenings dedicated to local cuisine. The characteristic taverns set up in the Giardini del Pidocchietto become the convivial heart of the festival, offering the chance to savour the region’s traditional dishes in an engaging atmosphere steeped in tradition.

A story that began in 1495

The origins of the Palio lie in a true event that took place in 1495, during the conflicts between the powerful Perugian families of the Baglioni and the Oddi.

After years of fighting for control of Perugia and the surrounding area, the Oddi found refuge in the castle of Passignano. When enemy troops laid siege to the village, the men remaining inside realised that resistance was now impossible. To save themselves, they decided to attempt a desperate escape towards Lake Trasimeno.

Contemporary accounts describe a dramatic scene: the fishermen’s boats were hoisted onto their shoulders and carried at a run down the slope leading from the fortress to the lake’s shores. Once they reached the water, the fugitives attempted to reach safety, whilst their pursuers closed in behind them.

This episode, handed down through the centuries and documented by the historians Francesco Matarazzo and Pompeo Pellini, has become the symbol of Passignano’s collective memory and the heart of the event that still attracts thousands of visitors today.

The spectacular contest between the four districts

The highlight of the Palio takes place on the last Sunday in July and features the town’s four historic districts: Centro Storico, Centro Due, Oliveto and San Donato.

The competition begins on the waters of Lake Trasimeno, where the crews compete with oar strokes before an enthusiastic crowd. Once they reach the jetty, however, the race takes on a truly unique character: the boats are hoisted onto the shoulders of the bearers, who launch into a breathtaking race through the historic centre.

Winding through medieval alleyways, stairways, steep climbs and narrow passages, the athletes tackle one of the most spectacular routes in Italian historical re-enactments. Back at the lake, the boats return to the water for the final leg of the race, where the winning district is decided amidst applause, waving flags and an extraordinary turnout from the public.

A week of celebrations filled with history, flavours and traditions

The Palio delle Barche is not just a sporting competition. For a whole week, Passignano sul Trasimeno is immersed in a medieval atmosphere filled with historical costumes, parades, travelling shows, music, flag-wavers and activities for both adults and children.

The neighbourhood taverns offer the chance to sample specialities from Umbrian and Lake Trasimeno cuisine, making the event the perfect opportunity to discover the region’s culinary traditions too.

Taking part in the Palio delle Barche means experiencing one of the most exciting historical festivals in central Italy, an event that tells the story of Passignano sul Trasimeno’s identity through a tale of courage, belonging and memory that continues to be relived, year after year, on the shores of the lake.

Discover the Palio delle Barche in Passignano sul Trasimeno: a historical re-enactment featuring parades, taverns, performances and the thrilling race with boats carried on the shoulders.

[165066
165204
165167
post-385429","eb_event","type-eb_event","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","territorio-lake-trasimeno","village-conntection-passignano-sul-trasimeno","event_category-historical-reenactments
["GET
