That devotion is still alive today, but it has been enriched by one of Calabria\u2019s most moving traditions: the procession of the Holy Family at sea.<\/p>\n<p>In the late afternoon of 15 August, the ancient 17th-century statues of the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph and the Infant Jesus are carried from the sanctuary down to the beach below. From there, they are loaded onto a festively decorated ship and accompanied by a procession of fishing boats and private vessels adorned with flags and flowers. The slow procession through the crystal-clear waters creates an atmosphere charged with emotion, amidst songs, prayers and the sound of the boats\u2019 sirens.<\/p>\n<p>Participation is intense and collective: worshippers and tourists gather along the beach and on the cliffs, whilst many enter the sea in a symbolic embrace of faith.
