Capuchins’ Church and Convent

The foundation of the Capuchin convent complex dates back to 1578, at the behest of the barons of Tricase, Pappacoda and Gallon. It was completed in 1588 under the Provincialate of Father Cherub from walnuts.

The convent is characterized by the presence of machicolation in correspondence of doors and windows, which give the building the semblance of a defensive structure. The church dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, presents a simple facade enriched only by a baroque niche containing the statue of the Immaculate Conception. At the base of the recess Ë engraved with the date 1784, the year in which the Church was affected by the work of restructuring and renewal.

The interior has a single nave with rectangular, cappelloni two on the right hand side. On the bottom wall is set against the wooden altar dating back to the sixteenth century, finely inlaid and surmounted by the shovel representing the meeting of Christ with the Veronica on Calvary, assigned to Domenico Robust, son of the most known Jacopo Robusti, said the Tintoretto. At the sides of the altar are placed the paintings of Saint Francis receiving the stigmata and Blessed Felice da Cantalice.
