Parish Church of St. Pancras

Parish Church of St. Pancras

The parish church of San Pancrazio, located in the village of the same name in Val d’Ultimo, is a fascinating example of neo-Gothic architecture. Built on the site of the oldest church in the valley, the remains of the old walls of the nave are still visible. The church underwent an initial renovation in 1338, and in the second half of the 15th century the chancel and nave vault were added. Around 1890, the Baroque interior was replaced with neo-Gothic furnishings.

One of the church’s most distinctive features is the clock tower, which boasts richly painted dials and sacred figures on the doors, definitely worth a visit. The main entrance is adorned with neo-Gothic carvings made by Blasius Mayrhofer, a talented craftsman and native of Ultimo.

Inside, the imposing high altar, dedicated to St. Pancras, the church’s patron saint, immediately catches the eye. Also noteworthy is the 15th-century Gothic Madonna on the right side altar, a work that testifies to the long and rich history of this sacred place.
