The little Church of Our Lady of the Borders is located near the village of Montone, in Umbria. It is located at the end of the road that from the locality of San Lorenzo climbs to the fraction of Corlo on Colle Receipts, at the border of the territory of Montone. The name derives from the fact that the building was built exactly to the borders of the territories of religious competence (between the diocese of Città di Castello and the diocese of Gubbio) and civilian (between Montone and Pietralunga).
The small shrine is constituted by a building stone, typical of rural architecture umbra, with annexd the old residence of the chaplain and accessible from a scale outer side. The gabled facade of the sacred building has at its base a forepart constituted by a simple prothyrum a portico with protection of the entrance door and two small windows at its sides. The facade of the church is completed with a sober and large window grating, framed by local stone. Above the latter there is a tiny skylight of terracotta tiles. The building has a small bell gable roof with an ancient bell of bronze. The interior is composed of a single nave. Above the entrance door there is a sober wooden loft for the choir. On the opposite wall there is the altar placed between two side doors of access to the premises behind both surmounted an oval colored and decorated. Of particular value is the historical fresco depicting the Madonnuccia, placed on the wall of the altar. The eighteenth-century fresco depicts a slender figure of the Blessed Virgin of boundaries, with her child in her arms that squeezes in her left hand a dove or a dove. Above the head of the Virgin two angels supporting a garland of flowers. The picture is completed with five other puti, two on the right side and three on the opposite side.
From acts of a process would be that, around the year 1765, a shepherdess, such Margaret, the daughter of Belico, after having lost sheep, has found inside a small chapel, a Majesty defined in acts Madonnuccia. The prestige of the little shrine continued uninterruptedly until today involving not only the small community of San Lorenzo, but also the entire district in a special way during the festival that is celebrated every year on the third sunday of september. At the end of the twentieth century the church was badly damaged, first by the earthquake of 1997, then, as is documented (2011) by the photographic exhibition consultable in the sacristy of the same, by a serious and deadly action of vandalism occurred in 1999. After the latter serious event there was an extraordinary popular reaction. Some inhabitants of the contrada, and municipalities of the area (Montone, Umbertide, Pietralunga), have been organized, and self-financing, to clear the serious insult perpetrated to the sacred building and its furnishings. Thus, thanks to their generosity, this historic sanctuary of campaign is returned to the religious usability and its simple architectural beauty.
