Fort Tray

Fort Tray is located on the island of Pianosa within the village, on a modest spur that closes on the west the Old Port of Pianosa and east the modern landing. Together with the building of the Observatory and the curtain walls embattled constituted one of the structures to the protection of the ancient port of Pianosa. The imposing complex was built by Napoleon Bonaparte to the project of the engineer bridges, becoming a strategic framework for the control of the island that was contended in that period between French and English.

Fort Tray consists of several bodies of the factory which are adjacent to each other, which give the complex a rectangular plan. The most ancient part, partly lost, corresponds to the body of northern factory, which is delimited at its end to peak on the sea from a parapet on which is placed a statue of the Madonna placed by Mother Teresa of Calcutta in 1986 during his visit to the prison of Pianosa. The central part of the complex, also in the nineteenth century, instead dates back to the grand-ducal period post-restoration; the body of western factory, instead, was added to the beginning of the Twentieth Century and ends with a curtain wall semicircular whose foot is divided a garden with flowerbeds cultivated in succulent plants and decorated by a fountain with bathtub preceded in turn by an anchor.

The complex consists of several levels staggered, with most sections atop which have a crowning achievement for blind arches to all sixth on which it articulates the overlying battlements; at the southern corner and the north-western structures are present turriformi leaned to the remaining structure. Along the facades of west and east opens a series of double lancet windows characterized by central pillars on which rest the two pointed arches, in turn surmounted by the broader semicircular arc. On the whole, prevail stylistic elements of type neoromanico, well distinguishable in the plant of eclectic taste.
