The rock chapel of San Vito is a fascinating place of worship carved into the sandstone rock bench and located in the Cilento region. Although modest in size, the chapel is of considerable historical importance, as it dates back to a very ancient time, probably around the 6th century AD.
The uniqueness of its architectural typology makes it unique in the building tradition of rupestrian places of worship, distinguishing it from the trichore churches widespread in early Christian times in Sicily.
One of the most interesting aspects of the rock chapel of San Vito is precisely its dedication to St. Vitus, a young soldier of Sicilian origin who suffered martyrdom near the Sele River, located in Cilento, not far from Castelcivita. The figure of St. Vitus is also linked to the rocky micaelico sanctuary of St. Michael the Archangel in Olevano sul Tusciano, in which there are seven chapels built. Inside this shrine, in fact, it is possible to admire a fragmentary cycle dedicated to the martyr saint.
The rock chapel of San Vito constitutes an element of great historical and cultural interest for those who wish to delve into the religious heritage of the Cilento region and learn about the stories and testimonies related to the devotion of local communities in past centuries.
