Church of Our Lady of Grace at Buccheri

The Church Madonna delle Grazie, located in the charming Sicilian village of Buccheri, is an architectural treasure of ancient origins, whose foundation is lost in the memory of time. Mentioned as early as the Rivelo of 1474 and in notarial documents dating back to 1537, this late 18th-century church offers visitors an immersion in local history and traditions, as well as in the splendid religious art of the period.

Reconstruction and restoration after the 1693 earthquake
After the devastating 1693 earthquake, the Church of Our Lady of Grace was carefully rebuilt and restored. The work involved the facade, bell tower, walls and roof, restoring the place of worship to its former glory. In 1774 the work was completed with the laying of the “balatelle” floor and the stuccoes of the vault, the work of Nicolao Cultrera of Avola. To seal the end of the work, the coat of arms of Buccheri was placed on the triumphal arch, a symbol of the community’s pride and identity.

The altar of Our Lady of the Assumption and worship in the Church of Fontana Murata
The altar of Our Lady of the Assumption, which had been present in the Church of Santa Maria di Fontana Murata since ancient times, was transferred to the Church of Madonna delle Grazie. This transfer marked the passage of the ancient cult of Our Lady of the Assumption from the small church of Fontana Murata, now reduced to ruins, within the walls of Buccheri.

Fontana Murata was famous for its location nestled in the Santa Maria woods and for the presence of a nearby spring believed to be magical. In the past, the faithful would go in procession to Fontana Murata in case of epidemics, particularly scabies, in the hope of finding relief from the healing virtues of the water of this sacred spring.
