It is in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean that begins the story of one of the greatest players ever. In the small island of Madeira, closer to the coasts of Morocco than to those of Portugal, the land to which it belongs, in February 1985 Cristiano Ronaldo was born, a star of world football that a few days ago joined the Juventus team.

Capital of what is the Autonomous Region of Madeira is Funchal, center located in the southern coast of the island, named after the fennel, aromatic herb very common in the area. Located in the scenic bay surrounded by mountains, Funchal boasts an important commercial history related to sugar cane, bananas and the famous Madeira, local liqueur produced since the seventeenth century and used by Thomas Jefferson to toast the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the United States.

The beauty of the place joins the mild climate throughout the year, characteristics that have made the capital of the small island of the Atlantic a favorite destination of the European elite.

Funchal is striking for its particular vivacity; rich in history, it offers interesting visits to its historic neighborhoods such as Santa Maria, Sao Pedro and that of the Sè.

Ideal to enjoy the best of Funchal and its surroundings, a cable car ride to Monte, and take a ride on the wicker cart without wheels, the "carro de cesto".

Among the island's delicacies are the typical fennel sweets, the "rebucados de funcho".

There are many museums to visit, including that of Sacred Art, where you can admire several collections including paintings, sculptures, goldsmiths and sacred vestments dating back to the period between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, that of the Institute of wine, embroidery and Madeira craftsmanship, extraordinary path in the craft and culture of the island, and the Madeira Ethnographic Museum, located in the old grappa distillery of Ribeira Brava, designed for research, dissemination and preservation of the testimonies of the traditional culture of Madeira .

The island of Cristiano Ronaldo also celebrates its famous champion with the CR7 museum. Near the Madeira casino there is in fact the gallery of trophies of the Portuguese champion, 400 square meters hosting his 150 trophies won, then photographs, videos and even a wax statue.

Born from Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro and Josè Dinis Aveiro, the Christian name is due to the mother's Christian faith, while Ronaldo was chosen in honor of Ronald Reagan, his father's favorite actor.
