About the village

The ArcheoClub of Montalto delle Marche (Mundatë in the Montaltese dialect) has located 14 settlements dating back to Roman times and a Neolithic village. The finds that were recovered from the sites have allowed the opening of an interesting Archaeological Museum, which includes an educational trail with more than 3000 artifacts.

From 1586 Montalto was the seat of a Presidiato, the State of Montalto, which controlled 13 municipalities, while by the end of the 16th century, Pope Sixtus V had a Mint established there. The Presidiato was suppressed in 1861 with the end of the Papal State. The village has also given birth to the architect Giuseppe Sacconi, designer of the Altare della Patria in Rome.

Inside the village you can find many medieval architectural emergencies, such as the walls and gates that still surround the town, some noble buildings such as Palazzo Sacconi, Palazzo Paradisi and Palazzo Pasqualini, and numerous buildings of worship, first of all the Duomo , entitled to Santa Maria Assunta. Inside the historic town hall it is possible to visit the Archaeological Museum, the Prisons Museum and, in the basement, the Ethnographic Museum "Water, the earth, the canvas".

Nearby are the village of Patrignone, home of Antonio Bonfini, an internationally renowned humanist and the first historian of the Hungarian nation. Of particular value is the Romanesque church of Santa Maria in Viminato containing Renaissance frescoes. Finally, the village of Porchia deserves a visit for a valuable table by Pagani and a wonderful 15th century Nativity frescoed in the Crypt of the Church of Santa Lucia.

Before becoming a symbol of carefree family life, the Ascolan olive is above all a DOP banner, specifically from the province of Ascoli Piceno. And the history of the Ascolan olives is very ancient, dating back to ancient Rome, when the olives - for their nutritional properties - constituted the daily meal of the Roman legionaries and were the object of the attention of authors - and estimators - who wrote about it. Among these stand out Cato, Varrone, Marziale and Petronio which, in the "Satyricon", places them on the famous tables of "T...
