About the village

Located to the north of the river Tesino, the inhabited center extends along the coast up to the slopes of the nearby hills where stands the ancient medieval village. The intense urbanistic development, still ongoing, has extended the town center toward the foce of Tesino and along its course toward the inside. To the south of the end of Tesino is located the suburb of Ischia, which has become over the years a single urban center with the neighboring San Benedetto del Tronto. Grottammare has ancient origins. There are anthropogenic traces dating back to the neolithic age. On its territory was discovered a Piceno necropolis dating back to the VII-V century B.C. possession in the Middle Ages of the Abbey of Farfa was given to stop in 1214 by Aldobrandino d'Este. Between the XIII and XVI century was long disputed between Fermo and Ascoli. The current system of fortified walls date back to the XVI century, characterized by violent disputes with neighboring communities and from pirate attacks. The urbanistic plant resumes to Romans. The historical center is perfectly preserved and develops therefore around Peretti Square overlooked by the Prior Palace, the rooftop of the clock, the Orange Theater, the elegant Loggia and the splendid Belvedere. Not far away there is the seventeenth century church of Santa Lucia. The promenade along the walls you can visit the restored battle tower. Every year around the second half of August, the Festival Liszt, which sees guests pianists from all over the world, takes place to celebrate the bond created between Grottammare and Franz Liszt, the famous pianist and Hungarian composer, which in the summer of 1868 he stayed here for six weeks, guest of Count Fenili.
