The village of Gardone Riviera (Gardù de Riera, in the local dialect), in Lombardy, was already inhabited in Roman times and was subsequently occupied by the Longobards, Germanic people to whom it owes its name. Warda, in German, means exactly fortress, military garrison, lookout. Its mild and healthy climate and the fact that it is magnificently layed down on the western banks of Lake Garda, made Gardone a renowned tourist destination at the end of the XIX century. This is mainly due to the natural protection of the hill behind it, that allows a particular microclimate, mild in every season of the year. Since then many famous personalities stayed there, coming mainly from Germany, England and France, which restored or built beautiful residences, many of which directly on the edge of the lake or hidden in the lush vegetation that enriches the inhabited center of Gardone, again thanks to the particular climate conditions that allowed this territory to become a real botanical garden on the shores of Lake Garda.

Gardone Riviera is famous for hosting the Vittoriale degli Italiani, the residence of the poet Gabriele d'Annunzio, erected between 1921 and 1938. This monumental citadel was erected in memory of the Italian poet's life and is still the main tourist attraction of the village. An eclectic complex of buildings and gardens, which preserves, in addition to the house and to the tomb of the poet, Dannunzio's artworks and relics, an outdoor theatre, a rich library and a museum.
