The village was born around the landing, then became fishing harbor and has developed thanks to the latter activity, very practiced even today, equipping itself also a Tonnara, among the most important of the Sicily. The Tonnara Marzamemi dates back to the time of the domination of the Arabs in Sicily. In 1630 was sold by the owner to the Principe di Villadorata. The Villadorata potenziarono buildings of the Tonnara and leading from Avola and from Syracuse of skilled carpenters, which then remained residents to Marzamemi. In 1752 they built the palace and the church of tonnara, and Le Casette sailors. In 1912 was built to Marzamemi one processing plant of salted tuna and later of the tuna fish in oil. The fishing of the tonnara was abundant until the postwar period.

In summer the population increases considerably, thanks also to the residential settlements arose in the vicinity of the ancient village.
