You don't know a place if you don't understand its history and its true soul. Those who love to travel, in the true sense of the word, that is, discovering the secrets of the place they visit, can not miss an excursion into the history of Amalfi. This is the Sentiero delle 13 Chiese, a path that winds through the villages of Tramonti, one of the pearls of Amalfi.
When you think of the Amalfi Coast come immediately to mind, in addition to the cityà of Amalfi, towns like Maiori, Minori and Atrani. Going a little more 'inland, without straying too far from the crystal clear waters of the coast, however, are some real gems of this area, little known by mass tourism. Among these there is certainly Tramonti, known for having given its name to the Tramontana wind. The Amalfitans, in fact, called soì the wind that blew from these territories.
The peculiarity of Tramonti è linked to its territorial organization. Unlike many historical urban centers, composed by a village surrounded by many small hamlets, Tramonti was organized in thirteen villages arranged in a circular way around the Santa Maria Hill. Each village had its own church, its own square and its own fountain. Today there are only eleven of these villages, but the thirteen churches are still intact and offer the possibility to know the suggestive history of these territories.
Because they are villages arranged in a circular fashion, there is no precise order for the start of the trail. However, since the village of Pucara is the closest one to Maiori, and therefore the best connected by public transport, it would be better to start from there, and then proceed to the discovery of the other twelve villages and the other twelve churches. The path that joins them and that allows you to visit Tramonti is called, in fact, the 13 Churches Path. It is a path recognized by the CAI and has an average difficulty of distance.
The trail along the 13 Churches Trail is scheduled for the weekend.
