Norman tower

What to see in Bova, Reggio Calabria, Calabria

Share

Built in the 11th century, it was an integral part of the walls erected to protect the fortress of the Greek city during the riskiest period of its history, when Saracen pirates infested the lower Mediterranean with continuous incursions into the centers of the Calabrian coast. The danger made it necessary to develop a rapid and efficient communication system between the nearby centers and the watchtowers assumed great importance in this sense: thanks to actual smoke signals, the Norman Tower of Bova communicated promptly with the neighbor Torre dell'Amendolea, signaling any incursions or imminent attacks from the sea and also providing indications on the position of the enemies. Today the Tower, located near one of the ancient access gates to Bova, is an interesting panoramic point on the coast of Bova Marina.
