The Mother church is dedicated to San Giorgio, the patron saint of the city. The current building was begun in 1790 and concluded in 1825 on the same area where in the past were built two other churches dedicated to the same holy. The first in the XII century, and confirms it a document of 1195 which refers to a round place with a church of San Giorgio. The second reconstruction dates back to the second half of the XVI century, and also in this case a plaque says that the church was finished in 1579. The projects of the Church and all related internal works were the work of Giuseppe Gimma and Nicola Fasano, engineers Locorotondo. The recent restoration has returned to the visitors the sight of old foundations of the previous church, that you may observe thanks to the positioning of slabs of glass. The facade is in neoclassical style and the eardrum you can admire a representation in relief of San Giorgio with the dragon in the center and at the two corners down the statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The bell tower, high m. 47, at the four corners of the first order presents the three Maries and Veronica originating from the dismantling of the polyptych of the existing piety in the Old Mother Church. The interior is articulated on a Greek cross plan, with a central dome 35 meters high. On the left opens the chapel of the SS. The sacrament, interesting for the Bible Pauperum which reproduces the biblical scenes on 42 frames, heritage coming from previous sixteenth century chapel. In the apse of the chapel stands out the large painting of the Last Supper (1841) of the Neapolitan painter Gennaro Maldarelli, to which you must also the canvas of S.Giorgio 1841. Another canvas worthy of mention is the work of the Madonna del Rosario (1769) framed by 15 oval depicting the mysteries, signed by the martinese painter Francesco De Mauro. Each chapel is adorned by important baroque altars of Neapolitan manufactory made between the XVIII and the XIX century. The church can be visited in the following opening hours: 7,30-12,30 17,00-20,00.
