Church of Santa Maria delle Colonne

What to see in Grotte di Castro, Viterbo, Lazio

The church, located outside the town of Grotte di Castro, has very ancient origins dating from between the 12th and 13th centuries. In ancient times it was called Santa Maria dei Monaci. The building we see today, with a single nave ending in a small apse, has undergone substantial changes over the centuries. Inside we can admire frescoes: a Madonna on the Throne with Child Jesus (already mentioned in the pastoral visit of 1629); the Archangel Gabriel and the Madonna; the Annunciation. The remains of Romanesque capitals with foliage, heads and peacocks are also visible.
