Necropolis of Vigna la Piazza

What to see in Grotte di Castro, Viterbo, Lazio

Datable between the end of the 8th and the beginning of the 7th century B.C., sector B of the necropolis is characterised by the presence of individual pit burials, often inserted in a central position within a circle of stones placed dry. The deceased is laid in a supine position in direct contact with the ground but, in some cases, the presence of a wooden sarcophagus is attested. This same area is later exploited by the installation of circles of squared tufa blocks larger than the previous ones (6 m in diameter), which enclose within them a single burial in a lithic sarcophagus. In sector A of the necropolis there are chamber tombs dating to the middle of the 7th and 6th centuries BC.
