Orridi di Uriezzo

What to see in Baceno, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Piedmont

Share

Orridi di Uriezzo formed from the torrents that used to run at the bottom of the glacier that entirely occupied Formazza Valley.

Today, tourists can walk freely inside these caves, because the water of the torrent that had shaped them doesn’t flow there anymore.

The Orridi are accessible thanks to several big caves, separated from curvy and narrow tunnels. On each side, there are many recesses and grooves – powerful waterfalls have shaped them; in certain spots, it is impossible to see the sky as the tunnels are joined together.

The most amazing place in the area is South Orrido, with a length of 200 metres and a depth of 20/30 metres – locals call it “Uriezzo Tomb”.

The ecosystem of these caves is very complex: high humidity and low light conditions worsen the environmental conditions and endanger the life of a wide variety of mosses and ferns.
