Church of San Nicolò

What to see in Borgo Sacco, Trento, Trentino-South Tyrol

In Filzi square stands the church of San Nicolò, patron saint of seafarers and then protector of zattieri. It was built by the confraternity of zattieri in 1479, at the time was right on the harbor, on the banks of the river, near the Civic Tower and then under the house of the town. In the second half of 1500 was restored and still was remodeled several times, if a time the entrance to the church was on the surface of the water for the lumbering, the door was subsequently closed and moved in order to facilitate the construction of a bridge over the Adige.

Given its position, the church was more times flooded as show the numerous frescoes now damaged. Today it houses the center a wooden altar with frontal carved into which is inserted a canvas of the eighteenth century with the transit of San Giuseppe, while in the center of Ancona there is the blade with San Nicola di Bari, with every probability originated in a period straddling the centuries XVI-XVII and the work of a painter of the Veronese school. There is also a table opera of the dear painter Gaspar Antonio Cavalcabò Baron.
