Castle of the Gherardesca

What to see in Bolgheri, Livorno, Tuscany

The Castle of the Gherardesca, accessible only once a year, on 16 July, on the occasion of the patronal feast, is located between Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci (of which Bolgheri is a hamlet), at the end of Viale dei Cipressi. The complex, built in different eras, dates back to the late Renaissance (XVI century).
The church, on the other hand, is from the Middle Ages, while the bell tower and rectory were built during the 1800s. The two-storey building has a rather simple and linear façade, punctuated by single and double lancet windows. Very characteristic is the entrance, with its pointed arch, the floral motifs and the symbol of the Gherardesca family.
