Valdevarri

Valdevarri is about 8 km from the town of Sante Marie and is on the border between Abruzzo and Lazio, precisely in the area of ​​"Le Colonnelle", where a plaque was found with the inscription "ALBENSIUM FINES" (the end of the territory of the Albanian marsi ).

Valdevarri, of about 100 inhabitants, is the fraction of the spirituality marked by the various findings of monasteries including that of the Poor Clares where, in 1260, he lived the last years of his life and died the blessed Franciscan friar Tommaso da Celano, first disciple and biographer of St. Francis of Assisi, whose remains are found today in the church of San Francesco in Tagliacozzo.

The origin of this country is hidden by a mystery, there are those who say that it derives from a distant people of barbarians (precisely called Varri) and who claims that the variegates in dialect are the seeds of the oak that masters the landscape.In the area of ​​the "Rosites" there are thick chestnut woods, symbol of the whole municipality.

On 10 August 2014, the War Memorial was inaugurated and a square was dedicated to Pope John Paul II, which recalls the spirituality of the place. Among the local craftsmanship today in Valdevarri resides the only one of the municipality that realizes "the basto", a kind of saddle for mules or donkeys called "jo mastaro" in the hope that it is handed down in future generations.
