Church of the Most Holy Annunciation

What to see in Semproniano, Grosseto, Tuscany

The church in Cellena, a hamlet of Semproniano, located near the ancient dwellings of the village, stands in a flat position that offers a panoramic view of the Fiora valley. Its construction, completed in 1958 thanks to ministerial contributions and donations from the faithful, culminated on October 4 of that year with a solemn consecration.

This religious building, with its romantic modern style, is distinguished by its facade, characterized by a modern-style pronaos and an eye adorned with mosaics. The interior of the church, which covers an area of about 146 square meters, has a Latin cross plan with two small chapels dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Anthony of Padua.

The interior of the church is embellished with selected and precious marbles, embellished with mosaics. In addition, twelve historiated stained glass windows create a particularly striking atmosphere.

The bell tower, made of terracotta, houses two bells cast in 1958. Adjacent to the church is the rectory and other buildings. In front of the church and buildings, a large parish-owned park stretches up the hill.

South Pole Cross
The astylar cross you can admire , made by sculptor Andrea Trisciuzzi, is the only existing copy. The original was blessed by Pope, St. John Paul II, on the occasion of the Jubilee of 2000 and brought to the South Pole as a "prophetic" gesture, by Archbishop Liberio ANDREATTA on the occasion of the mass celebrated on January 20, 2003, after that, the first attempt on December 25, 2001, failed due to adverse weather conditions.
The Cross, in the year 2003, was donated to the people of Cellena by Msgr. ANDREATTA and has been kept in the Headquarters of the ASBUC Committee of Cellena .
The Committee, in 'year 2021, with the intention of giving an adequate and just recognition to the beautiful gift received decided , in agreement with the Curia and the parish priest Don Francisco, to put the sculpture inside this church so that everyone, in addition to appreciating its beauty, can dedicate a prayer to it.
The people of Cellena again thank Bishop ANDREATTA for the gift received.
