The Column of the Rings

What to see in Bertinoro, Forli Cesena, Emilia-Romagna

According to the Bertinoro tradition, the twelve rings column is known as the Hospitality Column.
It was erected in the central square of the village in 1247 by Guido del Duca and Arrigo Mainarde together with other noble families of the town to put an end to the disputes over who would host the strangers and pilgrims who came to the city.
Built with the rock of San Marino, the Colonna was equipped with twelve rings, one for each resident noble family.Once the horse's bridle was tied to one of the rings, the adventurer would be hosted by the family to whom the chosen ring matched.

As proof of the fact that hospitality and respect for the other are part of the cultural and civil heritage of this city, in Bertinoro on the first Sunday of September, the traditional Feast of Hospitality takes place to remember and promote one of the most renowned features of these lands, openness and hospitality for foreigners, through the re-enactment of an ancient rite and with the organization of events, exhibitions, shows and music.
