The Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, which has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has hosted uninterrupted pilgrimages from all over the world to Monte Sant'Angelo since the 5th century. It is one of the most famous sacred places in the world and its origin is linked to the apparitions of the Archangel Michael on the Gargano in San Lorenzo Maiorano, in 490.
Arranged over two floors, the facade of the basilica is composed of two large arches, dominated by a niche with the statue of San Michele and the bell tower, also known as the Angevin tower.Inside there are 86 steps that lead to the Sacred Grotto, the place where the first apparition took place and in which the words of the Archangel that made this place mystical are read: “Where the rock opens up, the sins of men will be forgiven there ".
