The villages of Abruzzo make cooperative to be reborn to new life

Many hands make light work. The residents of the villages of Abruzzo know it very well and, after the earthquake in the summer of 2016, have rolled up their sleeves to maintain artistic and cultural charm of the countries hit by the earthquake through laboratories of active citizenship. These are cooperatives aimed to meet the daily needs of citizens. Real local enterprises conceived to ease the dynamics of small communities: from reopening of the historical emporium to the school transport of children, from assistance to older people to shopping at home, passing through the valorization of typical food and the development of tourism. Great attention is also dedicated to the care of the naturalistic territory and to sustainable management of forest resources.

Atri

A network of villages with eleven municipalities, from the smallest, Santo Stefano Sessanio (113 inhabitants) to the largest, Tollo (4.122).

«The community cooperatives - explained Massimiliano Monetti, architect of Chieti and president of "Confcooperative Abruzzo" - can represent a turning point for our small countries in the internal areas, first of all those affected by earthquakes, because unite the inhabitants in a common, competitive project and wide-ranging, but Abruzzo Region must immediately provide an economic incentive and change some too binding aspects of the law approved in 2015».

Scanno

The road is long but it's the right one. Even if Abruzzo needs its ihabitants to resurrect and attract more and more visitors.

«We need an incentive to give birth to these cooperatives - confirms Monetti - It would be enough to start 10 thousand euros for a cooperative, 100 thousand euros in total, if we keep the target to the ten realities to be supported as a pioneer reality. Also "Confcooperative" is ready to play its part, with funds and support for start-up. Meanwhile we have a technical staff that can support these cooperatives, which is a direct help in terms of services».

In short, Abruzzo, a land famous for its characteristic villages like  Atri, Castel del Monte, Roccascalegna and Scanno, take off again from the teamwork of its inhabitants and invite tourists from all over Italy and from all over the world to watch the spectacle of a wonderful region.

Add to calendar 2019-12-08 2019-12-08 Europe/Rome I Faugni (li Faégnë) Each year, at the dawn of 8 December, in Atri repeats the ancient popular tradition of faugni (from the latin "fauns ignis", fire of the Faun). The peasants accendevano of fires, a propitiatory purpose before the winter solstice, in honor of the Faun; associated to the fertility of the earth. On the evening of 7 December the priest blesses the bonfire that will give light to the Faugni. The tour of the faugni ends in Piazza del Duomo, where the bundles of reeds ardent form a great bonfire. The procession is very festive, and sees proceed the Faugni (that sometimes can even reach 100) for the streets of the village, becoming true "rivers" of fire. Over the centuries the original pagan rite has been mixed with the Catholic feast for the Immaculate Conception of Mary, for whom today the procession of the burners and the great bonfire in front of the Cathedral are followed by the celebration of the mass in the morning in honor of the Madonna. Between 18 and 19 p.m. there is the procession with the statue of the Immaculate, statue dressed of Madonna del 1800, hoisted on a canopy of the same period (the height of the statue might be about 2 m.). In the evening of 8 December, finally, after the procession all concludes with the illumination of the two pupae, dummies from likenesses for women which are animated by two people hiding in the hollow interior of the phantoms. Pupae dance at the sound of the music of the band and illuminate fireworks display. After This pyrotechnical spectacle, from earth, launched by special machinery in wood that brighten up the night sky and give appointment to the next year. Since 2006, to the feast of the Faugni is related white night, with the opening night of all bars, clubs, pubs and museums and some churches. Atri
