Elevated to the rank of city in 1559 by the emperor Ferdinand I of Habsburg, to which he also conferred the privilege to coin money, in 1616 Correggio became principality, passing a few decades later to the Duchy of Modena and Reggio. The well-preserved historic center has the main artery in Corso Mazzini, flanked on both sides by the Verona marble paved porticoes, with the old cobblestone paved with double granite lanes to facilitate the transit of the wagons.
Among the main monuments there is Palazzo Principi, built by Francesca di Brandeburgo on a design by Biagio Rossetti, from the rooms with coffered ceilings and lacunars where are housed the Civic Library, the Corrigesi archives and the "Il Correggio" Civic Museum, located in the rooms on the main floor, which houses works and materials of significant artistic interest from various churches, public properties and private collections of the Da Correggio, an important feudal family.
Other treasures of the historic center are the Teatro dedicated to the musician correggese Beato Asoli, the sixteenth-century Basilica of San Quirino which, inside, houses a precious fifteenth-century ivory reliquary, the fifteenth-century church of San Francesco, from the outside in terracotta with friezes and from inside it has three naves with pointed arches with remains of late fifteenth-century frescoes, and the seventeenth-century church of Santa Chiara, on models that recall Borromini.
