Trumpets' Feast in honor of SS. Peter and Paul

In the ancient village of Grottaglie, at the "Pittaggio San Pietro," a centuries-old tradition is perpetuated: the "Feast of the Trumpets," on the occasion of the festivities of Saints Peter and Paul, June 29, at the chapel of the same name.

A unique expression since the 1500s, it coagulates three traditions present in the territory in the past: the Jewish tradition, with the sound of the "shofar"; the Christian tradition, Feast of St. Peter the Apostle (Jewish); and the centuries-old art of pottery.

Hence, probably, the inclusion in the festivities of the "St. Peter's trumpet," a clay artifact with apotropaic value, which was and is used to give as a gift to persons worthy of esteem or friends. At one time the "trumpets" were exchanged for a few baskets of florones or other products of the earth.

In some ancient writings we read, "From the first vespers of the eve, until the night of June 29, the "sound" of the artifact: farts and shrieks, cheered the feast, warding off debts and diseases, until they were broken and shattered, in a "liberating" act, at high night silence returned and those sounds were not heard again for a whole year."

The traditional "Feast" and all its historical and anthropological baggage sank into oblivion in the early 1960′s, when the chapel was reduced to a warehouse and shelter for farm vehicles.
