Feast of San Rocco
from sunday 18 august 2024 to tuesday 20 august 2024 in Montescaglioso, Matera
It is one of the most heartfelt patronal feasts in Basilicata. The patronal festivities take place with rituals and appointments that have been codified for a long time. The festivities open as per tradition on the 31st of July and close on the Sunday of the eighth. The main day of the feast is August 20. In the morning, from the Mother Church, there is the long traditional procession that touches the most suggestive points of the historical center up to the new districts, ending in the early afternoon, always in the Mother Church. In the evening from the convent of the PP. Cappuccini, the statue of San Rocco "of the cart" is hoisted on the triumphal wagon and pulled by 7 majestic horses, festively adorned for the occasion, which pull the beautiful artifact along a historical path remained unchanged over the years, to the central square where the saint is returned to his church of origin. The parade is also preceded by the traditional ride of the clergy that sees several seminarians and priests on horseback both from Montese and the Diocese. In the night the classic fireworks start, at the end of the exhibition of the best musical bands in cassharmonic. They frame the party of the sumptuous illuminations coming from the best firms of the sector.
