Feast of San Pardo

Larino's Patronal Feast is considered one of the most beautiful celebrations in Italy. The origins of this holiday date back to 842 when some inhabitants survived the invasion of the Saracens, found the tomb that contained the body of the saint, considering it as a divine find, the larines cast the saint as their protector, loaded their remains on a wagon lined with flowers and brought him to town, followed by a triumphant procession. The layout of the wagons (today it counts about 130) is an operation that takes time and effort. The wagons are towed by sheep, calves, cows and oxen, artistically dressed and covered with handmade paper flowers by the locals. The Car is the symbol of the family handed down from generation to generation, as a sign of continuity and tradition. Each wagon is characterized by a progressive number assigned to it according to its foundation date; the lowest numbers correspond to the oldest ones, the tallest ones are of recent origin.
