The night of Cucibocca concludes the Christmas festivities. The Cucibocca, also present in the Carnival of Montescaglioso, are the central characters of this mysterious tradition full of symbolism that takes place every year on the night before Epiphany.
The cucibocca of Montescaglioso are mysterious figures dressed in dark clothes: a cloak, old coats, a hat or a disk of hemp from a mill on their heads and their faces covered with thick white beards. A broken chain is tied to their feet. The dull sound of the chain crawling on the pavement announces their passage, from door to door they knock and ask for offerings.
