The Catenaccio is an annual event held on August 14 in Scanno, Abruzzo. It is a historical re-enactment that mimics the ancient wedding traditions of the area. The event consists of a wedding procession that accompanies the bride first to the church and then to the home of the newlywed groom. The procession seen from above looks like a bolt, hence the name of the event.
The re-enactment has ancient origins, it draws from the region's wedding customs but also from a 1706 poem by writer Romualdo Parente, titled "Zu matremonio azz'uso." The poem tells of the rituals and traditions related to marriage in southern Italy. Over the years, the re-enactment of Il Catenaccio has become a highly anticipated event for locals and tourists who visit Scanno during the summer.
One of the most striking aspects of the Catenaccio reenactment is the Shoulder Dance. It accompanies the bride first to the church and then to the home of the newlywed groom. Only one couple celebrates their marriage during the reenactment, while friends and relatives parade in pairs according to the order of kinship or friendship, wearing the traditional festive costume of Scanno amid colorful ribbons stretched on the sides of the lanes.
The traditional clothes that are worn during the Catenaccio re-enactment are very striking. In particular, the women's dresses stand out for their originality and beauty. The headdress is the highlight of the clothing: it has a strange but very original shape. The ornamental motif is represented by the custom of braiding the hair, previously divided into two braids, with colored silk cords, called "laces" in dialect. The hat, perfectly round, without side tips on the forehead, according to Arab custom, with a hanging two-tailed veil, is worn tilted to the right or back and covers almost entirely the hair gathered in a silk or linen net, called "razzola," often adorned with gold coins.
This re-enactment is a very important event for the local community of Scanno, as it attracts many tourists every year, attracted by the beauty and originality of the traditional clothes and the ancient wedding traditions of the region.
